Our History

William Nicol Ltd was established in 1935 by William (pictured), the Grandfather of our current owners, Mark and Darren Nicol.

The company operated from a roadside garage in Kintore, west of Aberdeen and it provided transport services between local markets and businesses.

The business grew steadily and in 1957 moved to Pittodrie Street in Aberdeen. As well as servicing the port of Aberdeen the company continued to expand and we extended our coverage from UK-wide to the whole of Europe.

In 2002, after further continuous growth and development driven by William’s son Bruce (also pictured), we moved to our current headquarters in Portlethen Industrial Estate, south of Aberdeen and established our Industrial Services Division on a three-acre site in Badentoy Industrial Park, Portlethen. The site includes a purpose-built licensed waste transfer station and bulk product storage facilities.

In 2023 the business passed from Bruce to the third generation and into its 89th year. We are sure that our founder William would be extremely proud of the highly successful yet traditional and friendly company that we have become. As are we!

Our People

William Nicol Ltd employs over 70 people, 40 of whom are drivers.

Much of our staff have over 20 years of service, indeed, this tradition of long service is very much a part of our company and we have a very low staff turnover.

Heading up our Industrial Services Division is Colin Lumsden and our Transport Managers are Gordon Horne and Neil Cowie.

All our drivers have HGV and CPC licenses and hold ADR training certificates which qualify them to transport dangerous goods and chemicals.

In addition, our specialist services operatives undertake confined space training, water jetting, and emergency response training.
